The Zircon StudSensor A100 is an electronic stud finder that locates the edges of wood and metal studs behind drywall and flags live AC wiring in the scan path with a separate warning indicator. You calibrate it by holding it flat against the wall away from a stud, then slide it sideways until the display marks an edge; scanning from both directions gives you the stud's center. The live-wire detection is the part that matters most, because it catches the case where a stud bay carries a run of Romex you were about to put an anchor through. It reads through standard drywall thickness and works on painted or papered walls. Best fit: hanging heavy mirrors, floating shelves, TV mounts, or anything where a drywall anchor alone will not hold.
Pros
- Flags live AC wiring in the scan path, not just studs
- Detects both wood and metal studs through standard drywall
- Marks stud edges so you can find the true center in two passes
- Simple one-button calibration with no app or pairing
Cons
- It reads edges rather than centers, so you have to scan from both sides to place your hole accurately
Frequently asked questions
Does it work on plaster and lath walls?
It is designed for standard drywall. Older plaster and lath walls, especially with metal mesh, give unreliable readings on nearly every electronic stud finder including this one.
Will it detect wiring that is not currently energized?
No. Live-wire detection senses the electrical field from energized AC wiring. A circuit that is switched off at the breaker will not register, so treat a clean scan as helpful but not a guarantee.
How thick a wall can it scan through?
It is rated for standard single-layer drywall depth. Double drywall, tile backer, or thick wallpaper reduce accuracy noticeably.
Do I need to recalibrate for every scan?
Yes, and it is quick. Place it flat on a section of wall with no stud, hold the button until it signals ready, then slide. Recalibrating each time is what keeps the readings consistent.
