Switch between inches, millimeters and fractions with one button
Is this the right fit?
- Best for
- woodworkers who think in fractions, 3D printing hobbyists checking tolerances, and anyone tired of squinting at a tape measure for anything under an inch
- Skip if
- It uses a button cell battery with no auto-shutoff on some units, so it can go flat in a drawer if you forget to power it down

This is a 6-inch stainless steel digital caliper with a large LCD and a one-button switch between inches, millimeters and fractions. It measures outside dimensions with the main jaws, inside dimensions with the upper jaws, depth with the rod that extends from the tail, and step height against the end face, which covers nearly everything a woodworking or 3D printing project asks for. Resolution is 0.001 inch and the zero button rezeros at any jaw position, so you can measure the difference between two parts directly. Best fit: woodworkers who think in fractions, 3D printing hobbyists checking tolerances, and anyone tired of squinting at a tape measure for anything under an inch.
Pros
- Fraction mode gives you 7/16 directly instead of a decimal you have to convert
- Four measurement types in one tool: outside, inside, depth and step
- Zero button works at any jaw position, so you can measure part-to-part differences
- Stainless body and jaws hold up better than the plastic calipers at this price
Cons
- It uses a button cell battery with no auto-shutoff on some units, so it can go flat in a drawer if you forget to power it down
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is it really?
It resolves to 0.001 inch and is typically accurate to within about 0.001 inch over the 6-inch range. That is fine for woodworking and 3D printing, but a machinist working to tighter tolerances should step up to a brand-name instrument.
Can it measure the inside diameter of a hole?
Yes, the smaller upper jaws are for inside measurements. Seat them in the hole and open until they contact both walls.
Does it hold its zero when you turn it off and back on?
It resets to absolute zero on power up. If you set a custom zero at some jaw position, you will need to set it again after a power cycle.
What battery does it use?
A standard LR44 or SR44 button cell. Keep a spare, because these read erratically as the cell dies rather than just going blank.
