The Fluance RT81 Elite is a belt-drive vinyl turntable built around a real walnut MDF plinth, an aluminum S-shape tonearm, and an Audio-Technica AT-VM95E cartridge with a diamond-tipped elliptical stylus. The built-in switchable phono preamp means you can plug it straight into powered speakers without needing a separate phono stage. Adjustable counterweight and anti-skate let you dial in tracking force properly, which keeps your records from wearing out and gets cleaner playback than the all-in-
Pros
- Real walnut MDF plinth with brushed-aluminum platter, looks built rather than molded
- Audio-Technica AT-VM95E elliptical cartridge, the same one audiophiles drop into much pricier decks
- Built-in switchable phono preamp, plug straight into powered speakers, no separate stage needed
- Adjustable counterweight and anti-skate, your records stop wearing prematurely
Cons
- Belt drive means you swap the belt every few years as it stretches, not a maintenance-free deck
Frequently asked questions
Can I plug this into regular powered speakers without a separate preamp?
Yes. The RT81 has a built-in phono preamp with a switch on the back. Flip it on and you can run the turntable straight into Bluetooth or powered speakers that don't have a phono input.
Does the cartridge come pre-installed?
Yes. The Audio-Technica AT-VM95E cartridge is pre-mounted and pre-aligned at the factory. You set the counterweight and anti-skate per the included setup card and you're playing records in about 10 minutes.
Will it play 78 RPM records?
No. The RT81 plays 33 and 45 RPM only. If you need 78 RPM for vintage shellac records, look at the RT82 or above.
How does it compare to the Audio-Technica AT-LP120X?
Different philosophies. The LP120X is direct-drive with pitch control aimed at DJs. The RT81 is belt-drive aimed at listening, with a quieter motor and a warmer aesthetic. For pure listening at home, most reviewers prefer the RT81.
