An extra-large open-top litter box made from stainless steel instead of plastic, with high sides on three panels and a lower entry on the fourth. The material change is the whole argument: plastic develops micro-scratches from claws and scoops, and those scratches hold ammonia permanently, which is why a plastic box smells within months no matter how often you scoop. Stainless does not scratch the same way and does not absorb odor, so it washes back to neutral. High sides contain the digging and over-the-edge spraying that open boxes usually lose to. It is heavy enough not to slide when a cat launches out of it. Best fit: multi-cat homes, high-spraying cats, kittens that overshoot, and anyone replacing a plastic box every year.
Pros
- Stainless does not scratch and hold ammonia the way plastic does
- High sides on three panels contain digging and over-the-edge spraying
- Washes back to genuinely neutral instead of getting progressively worse
- Heavy enough that it does not slide when a cat launches out
Cons
- Metal amplifies the sound of scratching, which some skittish cats need a week or two to accept
Frequently asked questions
Is it noisy when the cat digs?
Metal amplifies scratching more than plastic does. Most cats adjust within a week or two, but a very skittish cat may need the box in a quieter spot at first.
Will it rust?
Stainless steel does not rust under normal use, including daily scooping and regular washing. Avoid steel wool, since that can embed particles that do rust.
Does it work with a litter mat and liners?
A mat works normally. Liners are less necessary since there is nothing to protect the surface from, and the smooth metal releases clumps more easily than plastic anyway.
Is the entry low enough for a senior cat?
One side is cut lower for entry while the other three stay high. Senior or arthritic cats generally manage the low side, but a very stiff cat may still need a ramp.
How big is it really?
It is an XL open box, which fits most adult cats including large breeds with room to turn around. Two cats can share it, though the usual advice is one box per cat plus one.
