The Maono PD400X is a dual USB/XLR dynamic broadcast microphone aimed at podcasters and streamers who don't want to pick between USB simplicity and XLR upgrade paths. USB to your computer for plug-and-play recording, or XLR into an interface or mixer when you outgrow it. Onboard gain knob, mute tap, headphone-jack monitoring, and software EQ via the included Maono Link app. The capsule is dynamic (not condenser), so it rejects keyboard taps, dog barks, and HVAC hum the way a $300 Shure SM7B does, but at half the price. Best fit: starting a podcast, upgrading from a Blue Yeti, twitch streamers, and home offices with bad acoustics.
Pros
- Dynamic capsule rejects room echo and background noise, no acoustic treatment needed
- Dual USB-C and XLR outputs mean it grows with your setup
- On-mic gain knob and tap-to-mute beat fiddling with software during a live stream
Cons
- Requires a separately-purchased boom arm and pop filter for the cleanest podcast sound (the base table stand is workable but not ideal)
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an audio interface to use this?
Not via USB. Plug the USB-C cable into your computer and it works. Use the XLR output only when you upgrade to an interface or mixer later.
How does it compare to the Shure SM7B?
The PD400X gets you about 85% of the SM7B sound at less than half the price. The biggest difference is the SM7B's higher gain requirement (you need a Cloudlifter), which the PD400X handles internally.
Does it come with a boom arm or stand?
It includes a small desktop stand. For podcast-quality positioning, plan to buy a separate boom arm (the Maono BA92 is the matched accessory).
Will it work on a PS5 for game chat?
Yes via USB-C. The PS5 recognizes it as a USB audio device. XLR output is for PC/Mac audio interfaces only.
