The Gardener's Supply Company Arch Trellis is a powder-coated steel arch measuring 96 inches long by 24 inches wide by 48 inches high, weighing about 35 pounds, designed to drop into a 2 by 8 foot elevated planter box. Vining crops climb the arch instead of sprawling across the bed, which is how you get vertical yield out of a small footprint: cucumbers, pole beans, and small squash hang down where you can see and pick them, while the shaded ground underneath still grows herbs and greens. Link two beds with two arches and you get a walk-through garden entrance. Black powder coating over steel holds up outdoors year after year. The planter box is sold separately. Best fit: small-yard and raised-bed gardeners going vertical.
Pros
- Vining crops go vertical, which multiplies yield from the same square footage of bed
- Hanging fruit is easier to see and pick than crops sprawling on the ground
- The shaded ground under the arch still grows herbs and greens, so nothing is wasted
- Powder-coated steel holds up outdoors season after season without rotting like wood
Cons
- At $230 it costs several times what a bent cattle panel does, and the panel grows the same tomatoes
Frequently asked questions
Does the planter box come with it?
No. The arch is sold on its own and is designed to fit Gardener's Supply 2 by 8 foot elevated planter boxes, which are sold separately.
Can it be used without their planter box?
Yes, many gardeners stake it into a standard raised bed or into the ground. It just will not have the integrated mounting points it was designed around.
What can you grow on it?
Cucumbers, pole beans, small squash, peas, and indeterminate tomatoes, plus ornamental climbers like clematis, roses, and scarlet runner beans.
How hard is it to assemble?
It goes together with basic hand tools. The arch is 96 inches long and roughly 35 pounds assembled, so a second set of hands makes positioning it much easier.
