This Windscreen4less shade sail is a 16 by 20 foot rectangle of knitted HDPE fabric that blocks a high percentage of UV while staying breathable, which is the key difference from a solid tarp: hot air passes through instead of collecting underneath. The knit construction resists tearing and will not stretch out of shape when wet the way woven polyester does. Reinforced corners with stainless D-rings take the tension, and it mounts to posts, a house eave, a fence or trees with hardware sold separately. It comes down in minutes for winter storage. Best fit: patios and decks with no built shade, a play area or trampoline, a carport, and anyone pricing pergolas who wants shade this summer instead of next.

Pros

  • Knitted HDPE breathes, so hot air passes through instead of pooling underneath like a solid tarp
  • Covers 320 square feet for under 60 dollars, far cheaper than building shade
  • Reinforced corners with stainless D-rings take the tension rather than tearing at the grommet
  • Comes down in minutes for storms and winter storage

Cons

  • Mounting hardware is sold separately, so budget for turnbuckles, hooks and possibly posts before you can actually hang it

Frequently asked questions

Is the mounting hardware included?

No. The sail ships with D-rings at the corners, but turnbuckles, snap hooks, eye bolts and any posts you need are purchased separately. Plan on that added cost.

Is it waterproof?

No, and that is intentional. Knitted HDPE is permeable so heat and light rain pass through. A waterproof sail traps hot air underneath and collects standing water that will tear it.

How tight should I install it?

Tight enough that it does not flap, which is what wears out a sail. Turnbuckles at the corners let you tension it properly and retension it after the fabric settles.

Should I take it down in winter?

Yes. Snow load and winter storms are what destroy shade sails. It unclips in minutes and folds for storage.
