The VIOFO A229 Pro is a two-channel dash cam that pairs a 4K Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 front sensor with a 2K STARVIS 2 IMX675 rear, both running HDR for cleaner highlights and shadows. Real-world payoff is sharp daytime plate reads at distance and surprisingly readable night footage in low light. The rest of the spec sheet is just as serious: 5GHz WiFi for fast file pulls to the app, dual-band GPS with quad-mode satellite tracking, 12 voice commands, an emergency lock button, and a buffered 24-hour parking mode that needs a hardwire kit. The included CPL filter cuts dashboard glare on sunny drives. Best fit: drivers who want a no-compromise dual setup, rideshare and delivery drivers, anyone whose insurance company asks for footage.
Pros
- Dual STARVIS 2 sensors deliver clean 4K front and 2K rear, including night footage that's actually usable
- Included CPL filter cuts dashboard reflections on sunny drives, a feature most rivals charge extra for
- 5GHz WiFi makes pulling clips to the phone in seconds instead of minutes
- Buffered 24-hour parking mode catches the moment before the impact, not just after
Cons
- Parking mode requires a separate hardwire kit and an SD card big enough to handle the bitrate, both bought separately
Frequently asked questions
Is the SD card included?
No. VIOFO recommends a high-endurance card up to 512GB. Plan on adding one to the order; a 256GB high-endurance card is the sweet spot for most drivers.
Can I use the parking mode with the cigarette lighter plug?
Not for the buffered 24-hour parking mode. That requires a hardwire kit (sold separately) so the cam can stay on after the ignition cuts. The included cigarette lighter cable powers the cam while you drive only.
How readable is the rear camera at night?
The rear runs the same Sony STARVIS 2 sensor family with HDR, so license plates ahead and behind are usually readable under streetlights. In pitch-dark rural conditions it falls off, like every dash cam at this price.
Will it record continuously or only on impact?
It records continuously in loop, with old footage overwritten as the card fills. G-sensor impacts and the manual emergency button lock the relevant clip so it isn't overwritten.
Does the 5GHz WiFi work with both iPhone and Android?
Yes. The free VIOFO app is on both stores. 5GHz is significantly faster for pulling 4K clips than the 2.4GHz on older models.
