The VIOFO A229 Plus is the dual-channel dash cam that solved the 'good footage but ugly camera' problem. Pros
- Dual STARVIS 2 Sony sensors deliver license-plate-readable footage day and night, the bar most insurance claims fail at
- 5GHz WiFi transfers a 5-minute clip to your phone in roughly 20 seconds, no SD card swap to a laptop
- Ultra-precise GPS embeds speed and location into the video stream, accepted as evidence by most major US insurers
Cons
- Hardwire kit for 24-hour parking mode is sold separately; budget another $20 if you want it always on
Frequently asked questions
Will it record 24/7 with the car off?
Only with the optional HK4 hardwire kit. Default install runs off the cigarette lighter and turns off when the car turns off. Hardwire kit enables motion-triggered parking mode.
What SD card size is supported?
Officially up to 256GB. The community has reported 512GB high-endurance cards working but they are not officially supported.
Does the rear camera need wires through the cabin?
Yes. The rear camera connects to the front unit with a single 20-foot coaxial cable that tucks under the headliner and door trim. Installation is a 30-minute DIY job.
How does it compare to the A229 Pro?
The Pro upgrades the front camera to 4K and adds a slightly better night sensor. For nightly commuter use, the Plus is the smarter buy; for evidence-grade 4K, step up to the Pro.
