Crane's Drop humidifier is the teardrop-shaped ultrasonic cool-mist model that has lived on bedside tables and dressers for over a decade. The 1-gallon tank covers up to 500 square feet for around 24 hours on the lowest setting, which means it runs through the whole night without a refill. Ultrasonic vibration produces the mist, so there's no fan noise and it's quiet enough to sleep next to. Variable mist output, auto-shutoff when the tank is empty, and a removable tank that fits under a bathroo
Pros
- Ultrasonic, not fan-driven, quiet enough to sleep next to without earplugs
- 1-gallon tank runs about 24 hours on low, you fill it once a day, not twice
- Covers up to 500 square feet, big enough for a full master bedroom or open-plan studio
- Teardrop shape and matte finish look intentional on a nightstand or dresser, not utility-room
Cons
- Cool mist only, doesn't double as a warm-mist humidifier, look elsewhere if you specifically need warm mist for cold-weather symptoms
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to use a filter?
Filter is optional. The Drop runs without one. A demineralization filter is sold separately if your tap water has high mineral content (you'll see white dust around the unit otherwise). Distilled water solves the same problem without a filter.
How loud is it actually?
Ultrasonic humidifiers run around 30 decibels at low setting, quieter than a whisper. You hear water gurgling occasionally as the tank refills the base, but no fan whir.
Can I add essential oils?
No. The Crane Drop is not designed for essential oils and adding them will damage the plastic tank and void the warranty. Use a separate diffuser for oils.
How often do I need to clean it?
Crane recommends rinsing the tank with distilled white vinegar weekly to prevent mineral buildup, and a full deep clean once a month. Otherwise mold and mineral deposits build up in the base.
