The ENGINEER PZ-58 is a Japanese-made pair of screw removal pliers built for one job: getting out a screw whose head you already rounded off. The jaws carry vertical serrations cut on a fine pitch, so instead of sliding around a chewed-up Phillips cross they bite into the side of the head and let you turn it by hand. It handles screw heads roughly 3 to 9.5 mm across, which covers most furniture, appliance, and electronics fasteners. The tool is small enough to live in a drawer rather than a rolling chest, and it works on flathead, Phillips, hex, and security screws alike since it never touches the drive slot. Best fit: anyone who assembles flat-pack furniture, repairs their own electronics, or has ever given up on a project because of one ruined screw.

Pros

  • Vertical serrations grip the outside of the head, so the ruined drive slot stops mattering
  • Works on Phillips, flathead, hex, and tamper-resistant screws without a different bit for each
  • Made in Japan with hardened jaws that have not rounded off across thousands of reviews
  • Small enough to keep in a kitchen drawer, not just a shop

Cons

  • The jaws will mar the screw head, so the screw is scrap once you remove it. This is a removal tool, not a rescue tool.

Frequently asked questions

What size screws will it actually grab?

The jaws are sized for screw heads roughly 3 mm to 9.5 mm across, which covers most furniture, appliance, and small machine screws. Very large lag screws or very tiny eyeglass screws are outside its range.

Does the screw head need to be sticking up above the surface?

Yes. The pliers grip the outside edge of the head, so you need a little bit of it proud of the material. A screw sunk flush or counterbelow will not work without first exposing the head.

Will it work on a security or tamper-proof screw?

Yes, and that is one of its better uses. Because it never engages the drive slot, the shape of the recess is irrelevant. It grips the round outside of the head the same way regardless.

How is this different from just using vise grips?

Vise grips have flat or coarse-toothed jaws that tend to slip on a small round head. The PZ-58 has fine vertical serrations specifically ground to bite a screw head, plus a narrow nose that fits into tighter recesses.
