This electric aerator seats into the neck of a standard wine bottle and dispenses an aerated pour at the press of a button, drawing air through the wine on its way into the glass. It does in a few seconds what a decanter does in 30 to 60 minutes, which is the practical difference on a weeknight when nobody is decanting anything. It runs on batteries, works with most standard 750ml bottle necks, and the flow parts detach for rinsing. Best fit: red wine drinkers who open young tannic bottles, anyone without counter space for a decanter, and hosts who want the pour itself to be a small piece of theater at the table.
Pros
- Aerates during the pour, so a young red opens up in seconds instead of an hour
- Seats in the bottle so there is no decanter to wash and store
- One-touch operation makes it genuinely easy to hand to a guest
- Flow parts come apart for rinsing between different bottles
Cons
- It runs on batteries, so a dead set at the wrong moment means pouring the normal way
Frequently asked questions
Does it actually make a difference in taste?
On young, tannic reds the difference is noticeable, since aeration softens the edge. On delicate older wines aeration is not necessarily desirable, and on most whites it does little.
Will it fit any wine bottle?
It fits standard 750ml bottle necks, which covers the large majority of wine. Unusually wide necks and some dessert or sparkling bottles will not seat properly.
How do I clean it?
Run water through the flow path after use and let it dry. Do not submerge the battery housing, and do not put it in the dishwasher.
Can I use it on sparkling wine?
No. Aerating sparkling wine drives off the carbonation, which is the opposite of what you want. Keep it to still wines.
