The Granteva hair steamer is a 65W soft heat cap that you wear over conditioner or oil for 20 to 30 minutes. Heat opens the cuticle so product moves past the surface, which is the whole reason salons steam before a deep treatment. The cap has three heat settings and an auto-shutoff timer, and the inner lining is a waterproof layer you wipe down after each use rather than wash. It sits on a cord, so it is a sit-down-and-read situation rather than something you wander the house in. Best fit: type 3 and type 4 curl patterns, color-treated hair that feels straw-like at the ends, and anyone whose wash day already includes a 30-minute conditioner sit that does not seem to change much.
Pros
- Three heat levels so fine or color-treated hair can run it low
- Wipe-clean waterproof lining instead of a cap you have to launder
- Auto-shutoff timer means you can nap through a treatment
- Costs about a third of a hooded standing steamer
Cons
- It is corded, so you are tethered to an outlet for the full 20 to 30 minutes
Frequently asked questions
Is this a real steamer or just a heat cap?
It is a heated cap. It warms the moisture already in your conditioner rather than generating steam from a water reservoir the way a hooded salon steamer does. For most home deep-conditioning that is enough, but it is not the same appliance.
How long should I leave it on?
Most people run 20 to 30 minutes on a medium setting. Going longer does not add much once the cuticle has opened, and prolonged heat on already-damaged hair is not doing you favors.
Can I use it with oils, or only conditioner?
Oils, masks, and conditioners all work. Hot oil treatments are one of the more common uses. Just avoid anything with alcohol that will dry out faster under heat.
Does it work on short hair or locs?
Yes on both. The cap is generously sized and elasticated. Very long or very thick hair may need to be pinned up first to fit fully inside.
