The Oneida Dust Deputy 2.5 is a cyclone separator that sits between your shop vac hose and a collection bucket. Debris enters the clear cone, spins down the wall, loses velocity, and drops into the bucket before it ever reaches the vacuum. Oneida rates the separation at roughly 99 percent of dust and chips, which means the shop vac filter stays clean and suction stays constant instead of falling off after ten minutes of sanding. The DIY kit includes the cyclone and the mounting hardware but not the bucket, so you supply a standard 5 gallon pail. The cone is molded in clear plastic on purpose: watching the sawdust spiral down is most of the appeal. Best fit: anyone who sands, routs, or cuts often enough to be tired of buying filters.
Pros
- Separates roughly 99 percent of dust and chips before they reach the vacuum, so suction does not fade mid-job
- Clear molded cone lets you see the debris spiraling, which also tells you at a glance when the bucket is full
- Emptying a bucket is faster and far less messy than pulling and banging out a pleated filter
- Works with any standard shop vac hose and a common 5 gallon pail
Cons
- The DIY kit does not include the bucket or the hoses, so budget for those. Assembly is straightforward but it is not a plug-and-play out of the box.
Frequently asked questions
Does the bucket come with it?
No. The 2.5 DIY kit is the cyclone plus mounting hardware. You supply a standard 5 gallon bucket and the hose sections, which most people already have or can buy cheaply.
Will this work with any shop vacuum?
It works with essentially any shop vac that takes standard hose. Higher-CFM vacuums separate better. Very low-power handhelds will not generate enough airflow for the cyclone to spin properly.
Does it reduce suction at the tool end?
There is a small loss from the extra path length, but it is far less than the loss you get from a filter that is halfway clogged. Most users report steadier suction over a full session, not weaker suction.
Can it handle drywall dust and fine sanding dust?
Yes, though the very finest particles are the ones most likely to carry through to the vacuum. Coarse chips and sawdust separate almost completely. Expect to still clean the filter occasionally after heavy drywall work, just far less often.
