Nucookery's rimmer is three stacking acacia wood trays: one for lime or lemon juice, one for salt and one for sugar. You wet the rim of a glass in the juice tray, then twist it through salt or sugar for an even band, which is far tidier than the usual routine of squeezing a wedge and dipping into a saucer. Keeping the three ingredients on separate tiers means your salt does not end up sweet, and the trays nest into a 5.6 inch stack that stores on a bar cart or inside a cabinet. Because it is wood rather than the usual plastic sponge kit, it reads as part of a home bar setup instead of a gadget. Fit note: acacia is hand wash only and should be dried right away, and the trays suit rocks and margarita rims but not very wide coupe bowls.
Pros
- Three separate tiers keep juice, salt and sugar from contaminating each other
- Acacia wood looks intentional on a bar cart instead of like a plastic sponge kit
- Stacks down to 5.6 inches, so it stores without claiming a shelf
- Works with any rimming salt, sugar, tajin or chili blend you already own
Cons
- Hand wash only, and acacia dulls quickly if it is left sitting wet
- Trays fit rocks and margarita rims but not wide coupe bowls
Frequently asked questions
Do I need the sponge that comes with plastic rimmer sets?
No. The juice tier replaces it. You dip the rim straight into citrus juice, which is what bars do, and there is no sponge sitting in a cabinet going sour between uses.
Is it dishwasher safe?
No. Acacia is hand wash only. Rinse, wipe and dry the trays right away, and oil them occasionally with food-safe mineral oil if the wood starts to look dry or pale.
What size glasses does it fit?
The trays are 5.6 inches wide, which covers rocks glasses, margarita glasses, highballs and most stemmed cocktail glasses. Very wide coupe bowls and oversized fishbowl margarita glasses will overhang the tray and rim unevenly.
Can I use anything besides salt and sugar?
Yes. Tajin, chili lime blends, crushed graham cracker, cocoa powder and flavored rimming sugars all work the same way. Anything coarse and dry sits in the tray fine. Sticky or oily mixes are harder to clean back out of the wood grain.
