Hearth and Homestead's whipped beef tallow is a single-ingredient balm in a 1.3 ounce jar, unscented, with no added fragrance, essential oils or preservatives. Tallow's appeal in skincare comes from its fatty acid profile being close to the lipids human skin already produces, which is the argument for why it absorbs rather than sitting on the surface. Whipping it changes the texture from a hard solid to something spreadable at room temperature, so a small amount warms between the fingers and goes on thin. Because there is no water in the formula there is no need for preservatives, but it also means it is an occlusive balm rather than a hydrating moisturizer. Best fit: dry patches, chapped hands and lips, and people whose skin reacts to fragrance and long ingredient lists.
Pros
- Single ingredient with no fragrance, essential oils or preservatives added
- Whipped texture spreads at room temperature instead of needing to be scraped
- Occlusive balm that seals moisture in, which suits dry and wind-chapped skin
- Works on hands, lips, elbows and body, not just the face
Cons
- It is an oil-based balm with no water in it, so on its own it seals in whatever moisture is already there rather than adding any, and it is too heavy for acne-prone skin
Frequently asked questions
Does it smell like beef?
Properly rendered tallow is close to neutral, and this one is sold as unscented. Some people detect a faint animal note straight from the jar that fades within minutes on skin. Anyone sensitive to that should try a small size first.
Will it clog my pores?
Tallow is a heavy occlusive. People with dry or normal skin usually do well with it; people who are acne-prone often do not. Patch test on the jawline for a week before using it on the whole face.
How should I use it with other products?
Apply it last, over damp skin or over a water-based serum. It seals in what is underneath. Used alone on dry skin it has no water to seal, so it works better layered than solo.
Does it need refrigeration?
No. With no water in the formula there is nothing for bacteria to grow in, so it is shelf stable. Keep it out of direct heat, which will melt the whipped texture back to solid.
