Two Tumbleweeds Mixology Dice is a set of nine one-inch color-coded dice covering Spirit, Mixer, Sugar, Liqueur, Citrus, Herb, Spice, Fruit, and Bitters, plus a booklet that maps eight drink structures (sour, highball, fizz and so on) onto which dice to roll. You choose the drink family from the booklet, roll the dice it calls for, and build whatever combination comes up. It functions as a mixology teaching tool disguised as a party game: after a few rounds you start recognizing why a margarita and a whiskey sour are the same drink with different parts. Mocktail variations are included. Best fit: home bars with a decent bottle shelf, housewarming and holiday gifting, and anyone stuck making the same two drinks on repeat.

Pros

  • Teaches the underlying drink formulas, so the learning carries past the dice
  • Booklet covers eight drink families including alcohol-free versions
  • Dice are a full inch with readable text, not the tiny novelty kind
  • Packs flat enough to bring to someone else's place

Cons

  • You need a reasonably stocked bar already, or half the rolls turn into ingredients you do not have

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a full bar to use these?

You get more out of it with a few spirits, a liqueur, citrus and bitters on hand. With only one spirit you will re-roll a lot.

Can it make non-alcoholic drinks?

Yes. The booklet includes mocktail structures that use the mixer, citrus, herb, spice and fruit dice without a spirit.

Is there a recipe booklet or just the dice?

An illustrated booklet is included. It explains eight drink types and tells you which colored dice to roll for each.

How big are the dice?

Each die is about one inch across, which is large enough to read the ingredient text without squinting.
