A wall scanner that finds the stud and the live wire behind it
Is this the right fit?
- Best for
- hanging heavy shelves or a TV mount, and anyone who has ever drilled into a wall and hit something they did not expect
- Skip if
- It needs recalibrating against the wall before each scan, and skipping that step is the cause of most false readings
- Check before ordering
- Confirm the dimensions, exact model, included parts and return terms on the Amazon listing before ordering.

The FNIRSI WD-01 is a rechargeable wall scanner with six detection modes covering wood studs, metal, rebar, live AC wiring, and plastic pipe, with the reading shown on a small color screen rather than a row of blinking LEDs. The screen shows approximate depth and material type together, which is the part that separates it from a basic magnetic stud finder: you get told what is behind the drywall, not just that something is. It charges over USB instead of running on a 9V battery. Calibration is a button press against the wall before each scan. Best fit: hanging heavy shelves or a TV mount, and anyone who has ever drilled into a wall and hit something they did not expect.
Pros
- Detects live AC wiring and plastic pipe, not just studs, before you commit to a hole
- Color screen shows material type and approximate depth instead of a row of blinking LEDs
- Rechargeable over USB rather than eating 9V batteries
- Six modes cover wood, metal, rebar, wiring, and pipe from one tool
Cons
- It needs recalibrating against the wall before each scan, and skipping that step is the cause of most false readings
Frequently asked questions
Does it really detect live wires?
It detects the electromagnetic field from energized AC wiring, so it finds live wires but not dead ones. Always treat a wall as if there could be unenergized cable in it and drill shallow first.
Why am I getting inconsistent readings?
Almost always a calibration issue. Hold it flat against a blank section of wall and let it calibrate before each scan, and keep your other hand off the sensor area. Textured or freshly painted walls also reduce accuracy.
How deep can it scan?
Depth varies by mode and material, with metal detected deeper than wood. It is designed for standard interior drywall. Plaster and lath or tile over backer board will cut the effective depth.
Does it need batteries?
No, it has an internal rechargeable battery and charges over USB, which is a practical upgrade over the 9V battery stud finders that are always dead when you need them.
