A 64 by 39 inch steel roof rack basket with removable fairing and support bars, sized for kayaks, camping gear, luggage, and anything that will not fit inside the vehicle. Unlike a soft cargo bag, a basket lets you strap odd-shaped loads directly and leaves them accessible without unpacking. The fairing is the detail worth paying attention to: an open basket at highway speed produces real wind roar, and the deflector cuts most of it. Support bars underneath spread the load across the crossbars. Best fit: SUVs and wagons that already have crossbars and get used for camping, kayaking, or hauling. You do need existing roof crossbars for this, which is different from a strap-on soft bag, and the basket stays on the roof year-round unless you take it off.
Pros
- Removable fairing knocks down the highway wind roar that open baskets are known for
- Handles awkward loads like kayaks and lumber that a soft bag cannot take
- Support bars spread the load rather than concentrating it on two crossbar points
- Gear stays accessible and strappable without unzipping and repacking a bag
Cons
- It needs existing roof crossbars, so vehicles with a bare roof will need a rack system first
Frequently asked questions
Do I need roof crossbars already, or does this mount to a bare roof?
You need crossbars. This is a basket that clamps to an existing rack, unlike soft cargo bags that can strap through door frames on a bare roof.
How loud is it on the highway?
With the fairing installed, much quieter than a bare basket. You will still hear some wind above roughly 60 mph, which is true of every roof basket.
Can I carry a kayak on it?
Yes, it is sized and marketed for kayaks. You still want proper bow and stern tie-downs to the vehicle, not just straps to the basket, for anything that long.
Should I take it off when I am not using it?
If you can, yes. Leaving it on costs fuel economy and adds noise year-round. Most people leave it through a camping season and remove it for winter.
