The Occer 15x30 pairs 15x magnification with a 30mm objective lens, which is the compromise that keeps them pocketable while still gathering enough light to be usable. Field of view is 368 feet at 1000 yards, wide enough to find a bird before it moves. BAK4 prisms with FMC broadband multi-coating put light transmission at about 96.5 percent, so images stay bright rather than dimming the way cheap porro prisms do at dusk. The 16mm eyepiece is large enough to use comfortably, including over glasses for most people. Each set ships with a protective bag, cleaning cloth, neck strap, and manual. Best fit: bird watching, hiking, concerts and stadium seats, cruises, and travel where a full-size pair would stay in the hotel room.
Pros
- 15x magnification in a body small enough for a jacket pocket or a daypack lid
- BAK4 prisms with FMC coating for roughly 96.5 percent light transmission
- 368ft field of view at 1000 yards, wide enough to actually locate a moving bird
- Ships with a case, strap, and cleaning cloth, so nothing else to buy
Cons
- At 15x, handshake is visible; for extended glassing you will want to brace against something or use a tripod
Frequently asked questions
Are they hard to hold steady at 15x?
Some shake is visible at 15x, which is true of any high-magnification compact. Bracing your elbows or leaning on a rail makes a large difference.
Can I use them with glasses on?
The 16mm eyepiece accommodates most eyeglass wearers. Roll or adjust the eyecups down for the correct eye relief.
How well do they work at dusk?
The BAK4 prisms and FMC coating give about 96.5 percent light transmission, which is good for this class, but a 30mm objective still limits low-light performance compared with a 42mm.
Are they waterproof?
They are built for general outdoor use and travel, but treat them as water-resistant rather than submersible. Use the included case in sustained rain.
